Delhi and Meerut in just 45 minutes

Currently, travelers take the NH-58 to enter Delhi, which takes more than three hours to cover a distance of 70 km.

The 96 km, 14 lane Delhi-Meerut Expressway of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is now open to the public. It will reduce the travel time between Meerut and Delhi to 45 minutes instead of more than two and a half hours, the current travel time between the two cities.

Union Highway and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari took to Twitter to announce the start of the long-awaited road project. “The Delhi Meerut Expressway has been completed and opened to traffic. We have fully delivered on our promise to reduce the travel time between Delhi-Meerut from 2.5 hours to 45 minutes,” Gadkari tweeted.

The highway connecting the two cities is operational as of today. Currently, travelers take the NH-58 to enter Delhi, which takes more than three hours to cover a distance of 70 km.

Key points of the Road

It will comprise 14 lanes, six of which will comprise the central road to Meerut, the outer four lanes will be motorway lanes.

The route includes congested hotspots, including the NH58 section between Anand Vihar and Meerut, which passes through Modi Nagar and Murad Nagar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project on December 31, 2015 and inaugurated the first phase of the road in May 2018.

The project has been developed at a cost of Rs 8,346 million rupees.

The 82 km highway that connects the cities has 60 km of highway and 22 km of national highway.

Twenty-four small and large bridges, 10 viaducts, three railway bridges, 95 underpasses and several pedestrian bridges have been built on the road.

For the safety of travelers, more than 4,500 lights and cameras have been installed on the road.

For the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, more than 2.5 meters of bicycle corridor and 2 meters of wide sidewalk have been laid out along the roads of phase 1 and phase 2 of the road.

Various highway exits and entrances are provided for smoother connectivity, such as Eastern Peripheral Highway, Akshardham, Dundahera, Sarai Kale Khan, Dasna, Indrapuram, and Noida.
